The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, recently awarded scholarships to 100 students of Wigwe University in Isiokpo, Ikwerre Local Government Area, as part of the state’s support for the institution. Wigwe University, founded by the late Dr. Herbert Wigwe, former CEO of Access Holdings, officially began academic activities eight months after his tragic passing in a helicopter crash in February 2024, alongside his wife, Chizoba, and their son, Chizzy.
The late philanthropist’s vision for the university, despite initial fears that it might not come to fruition after his death, is being sustained with the support of the state government. The institution, which now stands as a symbol of Dr. Wigwe’s legacy, aims to nurture future leaders in Africa. The acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Marwan Al-Akaidi, highlighted the university’s mission to unite Africa’s potential for prosperity and create thoughtful and fearless leaders.
The scholarship program is inclusive, with 70% of the awards going to Rivers State indigenes and 30% allocated to non-indigenes residing in the state. Governor Fubara, represented by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ovy Chukwuma, emphasized that the government will ensure the late Herbert Wigwe’s vision for the university endures.
